Tybee Island

Weekend before last, Michael and I went to Tybee Island for a surprise 30th birthday party for our friend Brooke.  Her husband, Zach planned the whole thing and Christine and Clay came along too.  It was a short trip, but we had a blast.

It was my first trip to Tybee, and I don’t know if I would go back….it was a little dirty.  I don’t mean to be Debbie Downer, but I thought I should mention it.  Cigarette butts all over the beach.  But, you get what you pay for, right?  It was a great cheap vacation.  We had a great 2 bedroom condo with ocean views and we were right next to a bunch of restaurants, bars, shops and the pier.

Friday night we all went for a stroll down to the pier and then had dinner at a great restaurant with views of the ocean – Fannie’s at the Beach. There was a live band that was hilarious and a little scary all at the same time.  I laughed so hard it hurt.  Good times.  Saturday, we set up a big tent at the beach and enjoyed the ocean.  That night we drove into Savannah (only about 20 minutes away) and checked out river street and had dinner at Vic’s on the River.  It was a great meal!  I totally recommend this restaurant.  I had fried green tomatoes with goat cheese for an appetizer and meatloaf for dinner.

Our good friends Cooper & Rebecca are engaged!  We are so happy for them.  They plan to marry in Jamaica next year.  Here are some nice shots I took for them at the engagement party.  Don’t they look happy 🙂

I have been a bad blogger.  When I started this blog a few months ago, I promised to myself that I would blog at least once a week.  And, well, it has been 11 day since my last post.  BAD HEATHER.  I will be better. Promise.

Empty Nest.

The baby Cowbird flew away last night.  Michael and I saw the mama bird trying to coax the baby out of the nest.  We watched as the bird got up to the top of the pot while the mama Carolina Wren bird (who is the same size as the baby) fed her adoptive kid.  She would fly away and sing to the little one.  There were actually two Carolina Wrens helping.  Maybe one was the papa?

We watched as the little bird jumped down from the pot onto the bench and hopped around trying to fly away.  I went outside to take a picture of the baby Cowbird before it flew away.  Then I went inside to cook dinner, and when I checked 30 minutes later the little one was gone.  We have really enjoyed seeing this play out on our back porch!

Bird Update.

Well, I have some sad news.  There is only one bird left alive, and it is a Cowbird.  Cowbird mamas lay their eggs in other bird’s nests.  Our poor Carolina Wren mama bird is raising an impostor!

I spoke to a lady last weekend who warned me about the Cowbirds.  If I would have known earlier I could have removed the Cowbird from the nest and saved the 3 baby Carolina Wrens.  I guess I will know for the future now.

I know the baby Cowbird is innocent, but I just feel bad for the mama Wren.  She is working overtime to feed this huge Cowbird that can’t fly yet!  And it isn’t the cutest baby bird I have ever seen either.  Not the happy ending I was hoping for 😦

If you are interested you can read more about Cowbirds HERE.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Last Thursday was my 31st birthday.  It was a fabulous day!  And my 31st is going to be a fabulous year!

My day started with my friend Lisa dropping a cake off at my door that she had made!  (FYI – she is a great baker and very reasonable, let me know if you would like her contact info).

I picked up one of my bestest friends, Christine and we went to get a mani/pedi.  (Charlotte Ladies…you need to check out Q Nails which is across from Park Road Shopping Center.  It is on the small strip next to Starbucks.  This place gives you a mani/pedi with mini neck massage for only $30! )

Then we went to lunch at 1900 Mexican Grill where one of my other bestest friends, Blair met us.  Fajitas and Margaritas!  YUM

Christine and I then went uptown to check out the new Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.   The collection had some awesome pieces in it, with room to grow.  I am proud of Charlotte to have a museum like this.

A quick trip home to regroup and change for dinner.  Michael’s parents took me to Radcliffe on the Green for a chef’s tasting dinner.  The building is an old flower shop (opened in 1917) and now converted to a restaurant in the preserved building.  It was quite fancy and I tried some new foods – lamb and quail, both of which I can now say I am not too fond of.  The dessert was to die for…a red velvet shortbread.

After dinner, we headed to Jackalope Jacks to meet a bunch of friends.  A couple of skee ball matches and many drinks later, a couple of us decided to sing “Love Shack” in the karaoke room.  The video has been destroyed….
