April DC Trip

We went up to DC at the beginning of April with our friends, Brooke and Zach to visit Brooke’s good friend, Mara and her husband.  We had an absolutely amazing time and crammed a lot into a short weekend.  We flew in on Friday night and went out for dinner and drinks on H Street.  We were told that this was one of the hip new areas of town.  We decided to try out something new at SOUK – Moroccan Tapas.  It was delicious, but had some awful ventilation issues with smoke from the kitchen grill seeping into the dining room.  I sure hope they fixed that, because the food was really yum.  After dinner we headed to a couple of bars for drinks. Fruit Bat was fun.  Brooke and I had some crazy martini there.  Next we headed upstairs from Fruit Bat to Church & State for one last drink before heading back to Mara and Neal’s house.  It felt like you were in a church, complete with private rooms that were like confessionals.  Pretty hilarious for a bar theme if you ask me.

The next morning we were pretty slow moving from our night out on the town.  We hung out at Mara and Neal’s super cute townhouse, which they were so nice to let us all crash at.  Thanks kids!  Around noon we finally ventured out of the house and headed to the Nationals game.  It was one of their first of the season and they were playing the Atlanta Braves!  Michael knows a few people that work with the Nationals from when he worked at the Bobcats, so we got hooked up with some awesome tickets.  FIRST ROW BEHIND HOME PLATE!!!  It was amazing.  Something to cross off of a bucket list.

Friends and family started calling us telling us that we were on TV every time they showed the batter.  We DVDer the game at home, so we could see ourselves on TV when we go home.  Pretty cool.

After the game we headed back to the house to get cleaned up for dinner.  We decided to try one of Mara and Neal’s favorite restaurants Dukem – Ethiopian food.  I am proud of myself for trying it, but it is not for me.  After dinner we went to an awesome bar right down the street from the restaurant.  A gay sports bar, Nellie’s.  The place was packed and the decor was awesome.  I only wish drag queen bingo would have been going on when we were there.

The next morning we walked over to Eastern Market just a short walk from the house.  This is a must if you are in DC.  Eastern Market is the city’s oldest continually operated fresh food public market.

The cherry blossoms were in full bloom and it was a beautiful day.  We grabbed some bagels and shopped around.  I scored some great scarves for cheap and an awesome Yak hat.

This is Mara and Neal and their super cute pups.  They were great hosts and we really enjoyed getting to know them!

After wandering around the market for a couple of hours, we headed over to the Mall and National Monument to check out the cherry blossoms down by the river.  It was such a gorgeous day and all of the blooming trees were amazing.  Zach enjoyed showing off his toe-touches and him and Michael tried to work out the world’s issues.  I love the photo below of them in deep conversation with the Capital behind them.

It was an awesome trip and we hope to go back soon!
