Outer Banks – First 24 Hours

Well, this place is awesome.  Our first 24 hours here have been amazing and to think, this is only the beginning of our week long vacation!

We drove into the Outer Banks early Saturday morning after staying overnight in Elizabeth City for the night.  It was nice to start our vacation on Friday and break up the 8 hour or so drive.  We couldn’t check into the house until after lunch, so we toured around some slowly making our way up to Corolla.  We stopped by a Wings to stock up on some beach necessities – sunscreen, sunglasses, beach games etc.  The bast party – everything in the store was 50% off since the end of the season is so near!  So awesome.  And Brooke and I found a pirate.

We found a spot for lunch in Timbuktu where we could have Willy hang out on the patio with us.  And surprise, Mike Dianna’s Grillroom was offering a free BBQ buffet.  SCORE!  Willy enjoyed some BBQ too.

After lunch stopped by the BrewThru to pick up some beers and such to take to the house.  By early afternoon everyone (The Johnsons, The Kaskeys, The Budas and The Lumpkins) had arrived and settled in at the house.  Brooke and I headed down to the beach for an afternoon stroll before catching some rays at our pool.  There is a little boardwalk behind our house that leads to the beach.

The beach still has a lot of debris on it from Hurricane Irene that hit earlier this week.  We saw many trees down driving up on Friday starting in Raleigh.  Once we got to the Outer Banks, we saw many trees piled up on the side of the road from clean up.  Many of the docks on the sound side were badly damaged and there were obvious spots where the roads had been flooded.  We were so lucky that the northern part of the Outer Banks did not have as much damage as the southern side.  Needless to say we were watching the hurricane pretty close leading up to our vacation.  Now we are keeping an eye on Hurricane Katia.  It won’t hit land until right at the end of our stay, but I sure am worried about this part of NC getting hit again so soon.

There are so many great shells here all over the beach.  Brooke and I enjoyed walking around checking them all out.  The weather has been awesome too.  Highs of only 80 or so and lows in the high 60s.  Such a nice change from the super hot summer we have had in Charlotte.

Willy and I enjoyed a little afternoon nap before getting ready for some awesome college football games.  We have a great set up here at the house with 2 TVs in the living room and plenty of seating for all.  We were hoping for a GA Bulldog win, but that’s okay.  There were some great games on, so a great start to opening college football weekend.  For dinner we ordered in pizza from Pizzazz Pizza in Corolla.  I got the Hurricane Pizza which had a white pepper cream sauce, tomatoes, onions, jalapeno and mozzarella.  This was I think the best pizza I have ever had.  I am just so glad we found it on the first night so we can get it again this week!

Today has been all about relaxation.  Brooke and I headed to the beach this morning for a couple of hours to work on our tans.  The boys joined us for some football and fun in the sun too.

After the beach, we headed back to the pool at our house for a refreshing dip.  Even Willy went swimming and soaked up some rays.
